Fluente

Why now

Duolingo's own reviews show users praising its convenience while revealing a clear ceiling ('practicing for years' yet still needing help with 'common expressions'); the maturation of low-latency voice LLMs in 2025 makes real-time conversational practice economically feasible at consumer price points for the first time.

Problem

Adult language learners with limited time love Duolingo's convenience and gamification but hit a ceiling because the app lacks adaptive conversation practice calibrated to their real-world use case (work, travel, family) — they plateau at phrasebook-level fluency.

Audience

Adult Spanish/English/Japanese learners aged 25-50, particularly immigrants and professionals who use Duolingo daily but need functional conversational fluency, not streaks

Concept

A conversational fluency layer that sits alongside Duolingo (not replacing it) — a short-session AI conversation partner that picks up exactly where the user's Duolingo progress leaves off, using scenario-based roleplay (job interview, doctor's visit, parent-teacher conference) calibrated to their declared life context. Progress is measured by conversational task completion, not points, and a human tutor can be optionally booked for 15-minute 'breakthrough sessions' when the AI detects a persistent block.

[5/5] Great improvement

Duolingo has gone next level. Good Japanese tutor for someone practicing for years. Has helped me to advance with lots of common expressions. Much improved over the past.

[1/5] Please make hard mode go away

I love Duolingo, but the hard mode character is such a disincentive. I want to quit every time he pops up. Nobody needs that.
